How it works

Lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants that protect the retina of the eye. The retina is a multi-layered tissue structure that lines the back of the eye. It contains millions of cells that capture light rays and convert them into electrical impulses. These impulses travel along the optic nerve to the brain where they are turned into images. 

Zeaxanthin is especially important in protecting the macula, the central area of the retina which is responsible for the precise, detailed central vision that allows us to perform tasks such as reading. Zeaxanthin is highly concentrated in the central part of the macula, called the fovea, and decreases further out into the macula, where lutein is concentrated.

The protective effect is due in part to preventing oxidative damage caused by toxic free radicals. Some experts believe that the orange pigment of lutein also protects the eyes by filtering the damaging rays of blue light and near-ultraviolet radiation from indoor lighting and sunlight.
